1. Remove food and water source- Make sure you clean up all the crumbs and food left on the floor after a great meal. Most indoor pests and rodents are attracted to sugars and other morsels we leave behind. By ensuring a clean environment we help reduce the number of pests who find their way into our homes. If you have had an infestation removing the food source is important you may also look for a water source which may be attracting those pests. A number of times it is a slow leak or dripping pipe that allows for a colony to survive. Take a quick look around your faucets, under your house as well the perimeter looking for small leaks you can repair.
2. Block Entry ways- Some pests are so small you can’t physically block every entry point. For some such as mice and other rodents you can either find their entry point and close it Ideally you would want to replace the hole with the same material, however, steel wool can be used effectively to stop mice and small pests from entering. If you do find a sign of an entry point, I would recommend trapping or eliminating the rodent first then preventing more from finding the same entry. For pests that are too small to block I would recommend a professional product which when applied correctly will eliminate and prevent future pests from entering your home. 3. Eliminate at the first sign- No matter the pest you encounter I would recommend either trapping and relocating it or eliminating it at first sight. A number of species will send out a Scout to look for food or water and oce it is discovered they signal the rest of the colony to the find. If you can eliminate the Scouts you just may keep the colony out of your living space. The chances are if there is one there are many more where you cannot see them. Depending on the pest at hand you may consider a poison which will be carried back to the colony or nest and help destroy the problem at the source. I would recommend a professional evaluation as many pest problems are bigger than they appear and some can damage the value of your home. Or worse threaten the comfort and health of your Family and Friends or Co-Workers. |
